DAY 01: ARRIVE PARO • TRANSFER TO THIMPHU
Your Bhutan journey begins with your arrival at Paro International Airport, one of the most scenic mountain airports in the world. On a clear day, the flight into Paro offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks before making a dramatic descent through the mountains into the beautiful Paro Valley. After completing immigration and collecting your baggage, you will be warmly welcomed by representatives of Rustic Frontiers and receive a traditional khadhar welcome scarf, a meaningful Bhutanese gesture symbolising purity, goodwill, blessings and hospitality.
A group photoshoot at the airport will capture the beginning of your Bhutan experience before you set off on the approximately 1.5-hour drive to Thimphu, the capital city. Once a rustic village situated in a broad and fertile river valley, Thimphu has developed into Bhutan’s bustling centre of government, religion and commerce, while continuing to preserve its distinctive traditions and character.
In the evening, enjoy a private welcome cultural show featuring traditional Bhutanese songs and dances. The performance provides an engaging introduction to Bhutan’s religious and secular traditions and offers an opportunity to experience the country’s rich cultural heritage through music, movement and celebration. Overnight in Thimphu
DAY 02: EXPLORE THIMPHU VALLEY • SPIRITUAL & CULTURAL DISCOVERY
After breakfast, begin your exploration of Thimphu with a visit to Buddha Dordenma, the magnificent Shakyamuni Buddha statue overlooking the capital. The site provides an impressive introduction to Bhutan’s Buddhist traditions while offering expansive views across the Thimphu Valley. Continue to the Takin Preserve Centre, where you will encounter Bhutan’s national animal, the takin. Your guide will share the fascinating legend associated with this unusual animal and Lama Drukpa Kunley, one of Bhutan’s most colourful and celebrated religious figures.
The journey then continues to Thangtong Dewachen Nunnery at Zilukha, where you will have the opportunity to participate in a 108 butter-lamp lighting ceremony. The offering of butter lamps symbolises the dispelling of ignorance, the accumulation of merit and the cultivation of wisdom and compassion, making this a meaningful spiritual experience during your stay in Bhutan.
Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before visiting the National Textile Museum, where you can explore Bhutan’s distinctive textile heritage, traditional dress and regional weaving traditions. As part of Rustic Frontiers’ commitment to responsible tourism, take part in our “One Tourist, One Plantation” initiative, where every traveller plants a sapling as a personal contribution to Bhutan’s natural environment. More than a symbolic gesture, this experience offers an opportunity to give something back to the land you are exploring and leave behind a living reminder of your journey. Overnight in Thimphu
DAY 03: FURTHER EXPLORE THIMPHU VALLEY
Your third day begins with a special Long Life Blessing Ceremony performed by a senior learned monk. Dedicated to Amitayus, the Buddha of Longevity, the ceremony includes prayers, symbolic offerings and blessings for wellbeing, longevity and the removal of obstacles. This offers a meaningful opportunity to experience Bhutanese Buddhist traditions in a personal and spiritual setting. Continue to the National Painting School, also known as the Zorig Chusum Institute, where you will observe students practising Bhutan’s traditional arts and crafts. Learn about the techniques, symbolism and cultural significance of Bhutanese artistic traditions, including thangka painting, wood carving, embroidery and sculpture. Later, visit Bhutan Postal Museum to explore the country’s distinctive postage stamps and postal heritage. For those interested, personalised stamps featuring your photograph can also be created at an additional charge, making a unique souvenir of your journey.
After lunch, enjoy a hands-on traditional Bhutanese painting experience guided by a local artist. Learn about the intricate patterns, colours and symbolic meanings used in Bhutanese art before trying your hand at creating your own painting under the artist’s guidance. This interactive experience offers a closer appreciation of the skills, patience and creativity involved in preserving Bhutan’s artistic heritage. In the evening, enjoy some leisure time strolling through Thimphu’s lively streets and exploring the local craft market, where you can browse traditional Bhutanese handicrafts, textiles and locally made products. Overnight in Thimphu
DAY 04: THIMPHU – PUNAKHA
After an early breakfast, depart Thimphu for Punakha, a scenic journey of approximately 73 kilometres, taking around three hours. Along the way, stop at Dochula Pass, situated at approximately 3,088 metres (10,130 feet) above sea level. On clear days, the pass offers breathtaking panoramic views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks. Take time to admire the 108 memorial chortens set against the beautiful mountain landscape.
At Dochula, participate in a special Sand Mandala Creation Session guided by an experienced Buddhist monk. Learn about the spiritual significance of mandalas in Tantric Buddhism, including the symbolism of their intricate patterns, colours and geometric forms, and their connection to meditation and the Buddhist teaching of impermanence. Using colourful sand powders, try your hand at creating your own mandala under the monk’s guidance. Once completed, the mandala will be respectfully dismantled, symbolising the impermanent nature of life and the Buddhist understanding that all things are constantly changing.
Following this meaningful spiritual experience, continue to Lamperi Botanical Park, surrounded by peaceful forests and rich natural vegetation. Enjoy a specially arranged outdoor picnic lunch amidst nature, taking in the fresh mountain air and tranquil surroundings. This relaxed setting offers a refreshing break from the journey and an opportunity to appreciate Bhutan’s natural beauty. After lunch, descend towards Punakha, Bhutan’s former capital, nestled in a warm and fertile subtropical valley. Enjoy the changing landscapes as the mountain forests gradually give way to terraced fields, traditional villages and lush river valleys. Overnight in Punakha
DAY 05: EXPLORE PUNAKHA VALLEY
After breakfast, begin the day with an approximately 30–40 minute hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyel Stupa. The trail crosses a suspension bridge before ascending through the hillside, offering beautiful views of the surrounding valley and landscape. Khamsum Yulley Namgyel was created with a specific spiritual purpose rather than as a conventional place of communal worship, monastic retreat or education. The stupa is associated with spiritual protection, peace and harmony.
Continue to the magnificent Punakha Dzong, one of the most significant architectural and spiritual landmarks in Bhutan. Built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the dzong served as the religious and administrative centre of the region and remains an important part of Bhutan’s heritage.
Following lunch at a local tourist restaurant, cross the famous Punakha Suspension Bridge, decorated with colourful prayer flags and offering spectacular views of the river and surrounding valley. In the evening, take a short drive to Chimi Lhakhang, the revered Temple of Fertility. The temple is reached by a scenic walk through rice fields and provides a distinctive glimpse into Bhutanese spiritual and cultural traditions. It is especially associated with couples seeking fertility blessings. Overnight in Punakha
DAY 06: PUNAKHA – PARO
After breakfast, set off for Paro, with approximately 4.5 hours of travel by road, crossing Dochula Pass once again. Along the way, visit Lamperi Botanical Garden, part of the Royal Botanical Park. It is Bhutan’s first botanical park and forms a biological corridor between Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park and Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Park.
Take a short walk around Baritsho Lake, passing through the rhododendron garden and daphne trees while enjoying the natural surroundings. The botanical park provides an opportunity to experience Bhutan’s diverse natural landscape and its collection of rhododendron species. Continue towards Paro and, upon arrival, visit the National Museum of Bhutan, housed within a historic watchtower above Paro Dzong. The museum provides an opportunity to discover Bhutan’s cultural heritage through its collection of historical artefacts and traditional objects.
After lunch at a local tourist restaurant, continue to a traditional farmhouse in the Paro Valley. Here, experience rural Bhutanese life and gain an insight into cultural traditions that have been preserved through generations. You will also have the opportunity to participate in a simple archery experience, while your guide explains Bhutan’s national sport. Traditionally played with bamboo bows and arrows, the targets are set approximately 120 metres apart.
Complete the experience by dressing in Bhutanese traditional attire, Gho and Kira, followed by a memorable photography session. Enjoy a traditional Bhutanese meal while experiencing the warmth and hospitality of rural Bhutanese life. Overnight in Paro
DAY 07: TIGER’S NEST HIKE
After breakfast, begin one of the most memorable experiences of your Bhutan journey with an excursion to Taktsang Monastery, also known as Tiger’s Nest, the jewel of Paro and one of Bhutan’s most sacred pilgrimage sites. Allow approximately 5–7 hours for the full excursion. The climb to the viewpoint generally takes around 1.5 hours, after which those who wish to continue can proceed towards the monastery. From the viewpoint, enjoy the spectacular sight of Taktsang clinging dramatically to the cliffside, surrounded by the mountains and forests of the Paro Valley.
As you make your way towards this sacred site, your guide will share the legend of Guru Rinpoche, who is said to have flown to the location on the back of a tigress and meditated in a cave. The principal Lhakhang at Taktsang dates to 1692, making the site an important part of Bhutan’s religious heritage.
The monastery was severely damaged by fire in 1998 and has since been restored. Today, perched high above the Paro Valley, Taktsang remains one of Bhutan’s most iconic sacred sites and a powerful symbol of the country’s spiritual identity. Overnight in Paro
